Badgers to send squad to Lincoln for two-day competition
Frank Sevigne
Husker Invitational
Friday, Feb. 2 - Saturday, Feb. 3 | Lincoln, Neb.
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field team hopes to continue the successful start to its season this weekend in Lincoln at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. The meet is set to kick off at noon on Friday with the heptathlon 60 meters and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the heptathlon 60 hurdles.
1. NOWHERE LIKE NEBRASKA: The Badgers made their last appearance at the Husker Invite in 2013 and excelled in their last appearance in Lincoln. Wisconsin shined in the heptathlon as Japheth Cato and 2016 Olympian Zach Ziemek went 1-2 in the seven discipline event.
2. HEPT HEPT HOORAY: The UW heptathletes will make their first season appearance in the event while in Nebraska. Trent Nytes currently holds the eighth-highest heptathlon score in UW history after recording a score of 5,526 at last year's Big Ten indoor meet. In addition, Paul Afflitto, Zachary Lorbeck, Sawyer Smith and Travis Toliver will make their season debuts in the event and will be joined by former UW standout Zach Ziemek at the event.
The heptathlon in Nebraska also features a rematch between Nytes and Nebraska's Cody Walton, as Walton and Nytes went 1-2Â at the 2017 Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio.Â
3. HOARE SOARS: Sophomore distance-runner Oliver Hoare rewrote the record books this past weekend after sealing a spot on the top-ten list for the 3000 meters. The Aussie ran a time of 7:54.91 during his first go at the event, capturing a fifth-place finish in the invitational section of the event. Hoare also leads the Big Ten in the event and ranks in the top-five in the country.
4. TOP TEN-AGAIN AND AGAIN: Wisconsin went home with a collection of top-ten finishes from the Armory. Sophomore Rashid Coulibaly led the brigade with a third place finish in the pole vault followed by Tim Guthrie in fourth and Jake Wallenfang in seventh. Along with Hoare, senior Joe Hardy and sophomore Ben Eidenschink saw success in the 3000 meters, both marking new personal records in the event. Tucker Wedig and Josh McDonald collected great finishes on the throwing end, placing third in the weight throw and eighth in the shot put, respectively.
5. LOOKING FORWARD: After competition in Lincoln, the Badgers will move on to Ames for the Iowa State Classic. Wisconsin saw a lot of success during their last trip to Iowa State in 2017, with the distance runners leading the way. Malachy Schrobilgen finished second in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:12.63, and sophomore Ben Eidenschink came in right behind him in fourth at 14:13.91. Sophomore Oliver Hoare and senior Joe Hardy took third and fourth, respectively, in the mile, both setting new personal bests. In the throwing ring, senior Riley Budde earned the runner-up spot in the weight throw with a toss of 70-8 (21.54m), while sophomore Zach Lorbeck took fourth overall in the long jump, reaching a length of 22-11 3/4 (7.00m) to crush his previous personal best by over eight inches.
