ANN ARBOR, Mich. — After a back-and-forth battle in the first half, injuries and turnovers saw No. 15 Wisconsin fall to No. 12 Michigan, 38-13, on Saturday night.
The Wolverines (6-1, 4-0 Big Ten) earned their first win against a ranked conference team for the first time since topping the Badgers two years ago. Michigan's Shea Patterson finished with 214 yards and a touchdown, including a career-high 90 yards on nine carries.
The loss snaps the Badgers (4-2, 2-1) record of winning 17 straight regular season Big Ten games and 10 consecutive road games in and out of conference play.
After a scoreless first quarter, Michigan got on the board first with a rushing TD by Karan Higdon at 13:33 in the second. Wisconsin rallied quickly on a four-play, 71-yard scoring drive thanks to Jonathan Taylor's run game. The sophomore running back picked up 38 yards on three carries and helped set up Kendric Pryor's TD, scored off a 23-yard jet sweep. A successful conversion by Rafael Gaglianone helped the Badgers tie the game, 7-7. Wisconsin's defense, lead by strong play from T.J. Edwards, including a seven-yard sack of Patterson — stifled Michigan's offense through the remainder of the half and keeping the Wolverines out of the end zone. Two successful field goals by Michigan's Quinn Nordin brought the score to 13-7 at the half.
Wisconsin's Eric Burrell stepped up for the Badgers on defense, leading his teammates with 11 tackles overall, followed closely by Edwards (10, 3 TFLs), Ryan Connelly (8, 1 TFL) and Andrew Van Ginkel (6, 1 TFL). Olive Sagapolu joined Edwards and Connelly in earning sacks vs. the Wolverines.
The Badgers' offense struggled in the second half and Michigan rallied to take a 38-7 lead with only 5:16 left in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Alex Hornibrook finished the game with 100 yards (7 of 20) and one touchdown pass to A.J. Taylor with 3:47 left in the game, but it was too late for the visiting team. He threw two interceptions, including one returned for a Michigan touchdown. Held scoreless, Jonathan Taylor finished with 101 yards and 17 carries overall.
Up next for Wisconsin, the Badgers host Illinois at Camp Randall Stadium next Saturday. The Homecoming game kicks off at 11 a.m. and will air on FOX Sports 1.
