Wisconsin snags thrilling double overtime win over Northwestern
Evanston, Ill. – Wisconsin (8-5-2, 5-2-0 B1G) traveled a state over to visit conference foe Northwestern (4-8-5, 0-5-3 B1G) in Evanston, Illinois on Wednesday night. The Badgers and the Wildcats battled for 102 minutes of play before freshman Noah Melick found the golden goal in double overtime to win the conference affair, 2-1.
After a Northwestern score midway through the second half, Wisconsin had a moment of panic before that was replaced with one of cool urgency. Wisconsin kicked it up a notch and began an onslaught on the Wildcat net. A laser off the post from freshman Andrew Akindele led to a booming finish from senior Isaac Schlenker to tie the game up.
It was all magical Melick from there. The freshman received a fantastic ball from sophomore Zach Klancnik and hammered it home to the upper-ninety for the Wisconsin winner. It is Melick's third game-winner of the season and fourth goal of the season.
The win on Wednesday night only further solidifies Wisconsin as part of the top of the Big Ten conference - something opportune for the Cardinal and White as the Big Ten tournament looms just around the corner.
