Freshman led all conference rookie skaters in goals, points
MADISON, Wis. – As a result of a sizzling start to her freshman campaign, Wisconsin women's hockey's Sophie Shirley was named the WCHA Rookie of the Month for September and October, as announced by the league on Thursday.
A native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Shirley leads all league newcomers with six goals and 10 points this season, including six of her points coming in UW's last four games. Her 10 points this year are second among all NCAA rookies, while her six goals rank as the best total by a newcomer.
Shirley was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week and the NCAA Third Star of the Week after her four-point weekend against Princeton, which included a pair of game-winning goals against the Tigers.
The UW freshman is the first Badger to receive the WCHA Rookie of the Month award since Abby Roque earned the honor in November of 2016. Shirley is just the third Badger to win the award since it was started in 2016.
Shirley and the top-ranked Badgers hit the road this weekend to face Minnesota State. Puck drop on Friday is set for 6 p.m. CT and Saturday's series finale is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
