Drake's Take: A Dream Come True
November 30, 2018 | Women's Hockey
Sophomore Delaney Drake shares how the game has grown
Hey, Badger fans!
Hope you all enjoyed the close matchups we had with Harvard this weekend. We ended up with two wins thanks to Annie Pankowski's pair of overtime winning goals. This made Pankowski the first in program history to score two consecutive game-winning goals in overtime!
Â
This is our last home weekend of 2018 and we are so thankful for the support we get each and every weekend. The familiar faces we see in the stands don't go unnoticed. We are so fortunate to go to a school where women's hockey is not only cheered for but celebrated.
Â
Women's hockey has come a long way. For many of us, we started our careers playing with boys, due to girl's hockey not being offered at young ages. We grew up playing a male-dominated sport, and it was often challenging to imagine a world where we would have hundreds of supportive fans each weekend. The world of our sport has changed a drastic amount and we hope it continues to grow.
Â
For junior forward Abby Roque, her world of hockey has had many changes in recent years. Abby grew up playing boy's hockey in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and didn't play full-time girl's hockey until she got to the UW.
Â
"Growing up in a town where the only option for me was to play boys' hockey, I could never imagine how many girls are playing hockey now and how many fans we have in LaBahn Arena," said Roque.
Â
When many of us got to an elite level, we had to move away from home in order to further our careers. Rochester, New York native Natalie Buchbinder moved away from home at the age of fifteen. Buchbinder attended Shattuck St. Mary's private school where she played a high level of hockey and furthered her education.
Â
"In order to play girl's hockey I had to leave home because there weren't any elite girls teams in Rochester at the time. It's crazy to see the amount of girl's hockey programs that are offered to young girls now, the game has come a long way," said Buchbinder.
Â
We are so humbled and grateful to receive a large amount of support from our community. It is truly a dream come true for us. Thank you to all of the fans who always have our backs and cheer us on as we play the game we love.
Â
Another out of conference matchup this weekend gives us the opportunity to show the meaning of Wisconsin Hockey. We hope to leave this weekend against Syracuse with two more wins in our pocket.
