Wisconsin will hold Face-off Against Cancer Game on Feb. 8
December 05, 2018 | Men's Hockey
Join the Badgers as they raise awareness for local cancer research; Standbrook to serve as honorary captain
Madison, Wis. - Cancer touches the lives of just about everybody. That is no different for the Wisconsin men's hockey program.
Because of that, the Wisconsin men's hockey team invites fans to attend the second annual "Face-off Against Cancer" game on Friday, Feb. 8 when they play host to Ohio State in a game designed to raise awareness about the work of local cancer research. Last year's event featured honorary captain Rob Andringa and junior captain Noah Sanger.
In partnership with the UW Carbone Cancer Center, the event will be a celebration of the doctors and researchers working at UW-Madison to find a cure, as well as serving to recognize those who fight or have fought bravely against this disease, the community impacted by cancer and the support they provide in this fight. This event focuses on individuals and organizations in Madison who are making great strides in the battle against Cancer.
The Badgers will welcome back Winnipeg, Manitoba, native and former assistant coach Grant Standbrook as the honorary captain for the evening. Standbrook, who served the Badgers from 1976 through 1987, helped recruit players like Chris Chelios and Mike Richter, and helped develop three NCAA championship teams at Wisconsin. The assistant coach to Bob Johnson at the 1976 Olympic Winter Games for Team USA, Standbrook also was head coach at Dartmouth and assistant coach at Maine during his collegiate coaching career.
The game will feature a ceremonial puck drop as well as presentations from the UW Carbone Cancer Center, The Ride, the American Family Children's Hospital, Garding Against Cancer and Gilda's Club Madison. Cancer researchers will be in attendance as we honor beneficiaries of the The Ride's proceeds during intermission which raise dollars to fund cancer research at the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
Â
Tickets for the game can be purchased through the Wisconsin Athletics Ticket Office at 608-262-1440 or online at UWBadgers.com by clicking here.
