MADISON, Wis. — Using a balanced offense to its advantage, the Wisconsin men's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to five games after defeating Michigan State, 5-3, Friday night at the Kohl Center.Â
The Spartans (6-8-1, 2-4-1-1 Big Ten) battled back from a two-goal deficit to knot the game at 3-3 heading into the final frame, but defensemen
Peter Tischke and
Wyatt Kalynuk each scored third-period goals to lift the Badgers (7-7-3, 3-3-3-1 Big Ten).Â
The Badgers took an early 1-0 lead after sophomore forward
Sean Dhooghe scored his fifth power-play goal of the year to put UW on the board. The tally also marked his team-leading eighth goal of the season.Â
UW freshmen
Mick Messner and
Ty Emberson tacked on goals in the middle frame to take a comfortable 3-0 lead, but Michigan State responded and Spartans' forward Patrick Khodorenko scored two quick goals to make it a one-tally game with eight minutes to play in the second.Â
Following MSU defenseman Jerad Rosburg's game-tying goal in the final two minutes of the second period, Tischke notched the game-winner at the 8:41 mark of the third period to give the Badgers' a 4-3 advantage.
With less than 10 minutes to play, Kalynuk went end-to-end before firing the puck past a sea of Spartans in the center of the MSU zone to cap off the scoring and seal a 5-3 win for the Badgers.  Â
Freshman goaltender
Daniel Lebedeff made 14 saves in the win.Â
Notes to Know:Â
- With the win, the Badgers are back up to .500 in winning percentage. Through 17 games, Wisconsin owns a 7-7-3 overall record, and a 3-3-3-1 conference ledger. The Badgers are unbeaten through the last five, skating to two wins and three ties.
- Freshman Ty Emberson recorded his first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist in Friday's win. Emberson is the fifth UW rookie to tally a multi-point game this season.
- Following an injury that sidelined him for 10 games, sophomore forward Linus Weissbach recorded an assist and finished plus-3 in his first game back in the lineup.Â

Head Coach Tony Granato
On third period momentum swing:
"We got back to playing the way we can. We knew that if we played smart, we would eventually be able to get some offensive chances. And our defense was great, which contributed to a really solid third period."
On evaluating tonight's win:
"We'll watch some film tonight and give our guys a few reminders on areas that we have to be really sharp on tomorrow. From the differences that helped us offensively to correcting a few things that gave them momentum."
 On Linus Weissbach's comeback:
"I thought he was outstanding. His presence and speed on the ice are great and he is just a nightmare for opposing team's defense. Linus was a huge part of our win tonight."
Â
Senior defenseman Peter Tischke
On third period toughness:
"I think we've played our last few third periods really well. The forwards track back well, we don't allow many shots on goal and all of this really helps our goaltenders."
Â
Sophomore forward Sean Dhooghe
On face-off wins:
"I think winning a face off creates a lot of opportunities, especially in the offensive zone. Whether it's just gaining possession back or finding the back of the net, I think face offs are something we've stressed in practice and in games. It's definitely something we're trying to pride ourselves on."
Up Next: The Badgers close out the 2018 portion of the season Saturday in the series finale against the Spartans at 7 p.m. The game also marks the second-annual UW Teddy Toss, presented by BMO Harris.
