Aiming high in Ames: Underclassmen lead Badgers in Iowa

UW wraps up second day of competition at Iowa State Classic
AMES, Iowa – With many of its younger athletes collecting personal bests, the Wisconsin men's track and field team finished up a series of outstanding performances at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday at the Lied Recreation Center.
In the shot put, senior Josh McDonald picked up his third top-five finish of the season, thanks to a toss measuring 56-4 3/4 (17.19m) to place third overall in the event.
The 800 meters proved to be an exciting event, as junior Eric Brown led the way for the Badgers with his time of 1:49.86 to finish runner-up in his heat. Freshman Austin Rendon came next for Wisconsin, finishing fourth in his heat with a personal best time of 1:53.33. Teammate senior Cooper Barth finished just behind Rendon in 1:54.47 to take fifth in their heat.
Freshman duo George Ghafari and Zach Dybul both saw success in the high jump, as they continue to improve throughout their first season for the Cardinal and White. Ghafari tied for fourth place with a mark of 6-7 (2.01m), while Dybul cleared a collegiate personal best of 6-7 (2.01m) to place eighth overall.
In the 60 meters, senior Kallen Bentz finished 11th overall, crossing the line in 7.23. The Wausau, Wisconsin native was also the runner-up in his heat of the 400 meters, running a personal best of 49.85.
Following this weekend's meet at Iowa State, the Badgers will return to the Camp Randall Sports Center for their first home meet of the season. The Wisconsin Shell Shocker will kick off on Friday in a double-dual against Marquette and Northern Iowa with field events starting at 3 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m.
