Shell Shocker
Friday, Feb. 16Â | Madison, Wis.
MADISON, Wis. – After a successful weekend at the Iowa State Classic the Wisconsin women's track and field team returns home to Madison for the Shell Shocker: their first home meet of the season. The meet will kick off with field events at 2:30 p.m. and running events at 5:15 p.m. in the Camp Randall Sports Center.
Badger fans can follow the action on Twitter (@BadgerTrackXC) and catch a recap following the meet on UWBadgers.com.
Â
1. LET'S SHELL-EBRATE: Last year at the Shell Shocker the Badgers saw a number of top-ten finishes and PR's to head into the championship season. Emma Haugen, Ebony McClendon, Kennedy Blahnik and Chinne Okoronkwo are among the Wisconsin women who took home a win at last year's meet. Taylor Amann also shattered the indoor school record which she has broken three times since.
2. BREAKING THE RECORDS: The dynamic distance duo of Amy Davis and Alicia Monson brought their pencils to the meet in Iowa this weekend and rewrote the record book. Davis and Monson took over the third and fourth position of the top-ten all-time school record in the 5000 meters. Davis' time of 15 minutes 44.65 seconds and Monson's time of 15:47.23 beat out a 33-year-old record and now Davis and Monson, along with Sarah Disanza, are three of the four Badgers who have run the distance in under 15:50.Â
3. ACTION IN AMES: The Badgers saw a lot of success last weekend in Ames for the Iowa State Classic. Banke Oginni took home her first win of the season in the weight throw while teammate Sophia Rivera was runner up in the shot put. Triple-jumper Chinne Okoronkwo finished runner up in the event with her best mark of the season to put her at fourtin the Big Ten. On the track, Gabby DesRosiers too saw a season high running her fastest time of the season in the 400 meters to place sixth.
4. FROM THE COACH: "This is the weekend where basically the team is picked for Big Tens, with the exception of five or six kids of both genders that are in the bubble. We've given their coaches standards that they have to make, and let's go get them. The opportunity's there, it's a competition, so go chase those times," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mick Byrne said. "The only thing for some of our kids this weekend is to stay healthy and not get hurt. For others, it's that opportunity, one more competition before Big Tens to get on the bus."
5. BACK TO THE BIG TENS: After their home meet the Badgers will kick off the championship season with the Big Ten Indoor Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Competition on Friday and Saturday will both take off at 9 a.m. (CT).Â
