GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Former Wisconsin women's hockey standout Sarah Nurse scored the game-winning goal to lift Team Canada to a 2-1 win over the U.S. on Thursday in the final game of group play for both teams at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Nurse beat U.S. netminder Maddie Rooney top shelf on a 3-on-2 rush to tally her first goal at the Winter Olympics and to give Canada a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Â
It marked the second goal in 11 months that Nurse scored on Rooney as the former UW forward scored on the UMD netminder in the WCHA Final Face-Off championship last March.Â
Another Badger helped the U.S. make it a game in the third as Brianna Decker fed the puck to Kendall Coyne, who scored to make it a 2-1 game 23 seconds into the final period.Â
Decker and Hilary Knight both had great chances at the end of the game to tie the game at two, but the U.S. wasn't able to score and dropped its first game in South Korea.Â
Decker ended the game with five shots on net, while Knight had four. Team USA captain Meghan Duggan finished with one shot on goal.
For Canada, Nurse had two shots on net while linemate
Emily Clark had an attempt on net.Â
Both Team USA and Team Canada have advanced to the semifinals at the 2018 Winter Olympics.Â
