Badgers edge out San Jose State

Wisconsin goes 1-1 Saturday at the Mary Nutter Classic

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Badgers capped off their Saturday with a 1-0 win over San Jose State after falling 7-3 earlier in the day to Missouri at the Mary Nutter Classic. After three days of competition, Wisconsin (7-6) is 3-2 in the tournament with one game left to play.

WISCONSIN VS. SAN JOSE STATE

The Badgers and Spartans (9-5) were in a defensive lockdown until the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Lauren Foster delivered a lead-off single up the middle and was replaced on first base by Heather Rudnicki. A passed ball moved the sophomore to second base and a Kelly Welsh sacrifice bunt put her on third base with only one out.

Rudnicki and the Badgers were able to get on the board thanks to another passed ball. UW took a 1-0 lead and earned three quick outs in the top of the seventh to finish it off.

Pitcher Haley Hestekin pitched her second complete game of the season and first shutout. The freshman finished with four strikeouts and only allowed five hits.

WISCONSIN VS. MISSOURI

Wisconsin got out to a quick start in its first game of the day. With Kelsey Jenkins on base from a leadoff walk, Brooke Wyderski sent one flying over the left field wall for an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately the Tigers responded with a two-run home run of their own in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 2-2.

Missouri (9-6) tacked on another run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 4-2 with three innings remaining.

The Badgers were able to close the gap to 4-3 thanks to a Reilley Peters double that scored Welsh. That is as close as they could get it before the Tigers went off for three more runs to seal a 7-3 victory and hand UW its second loss of the weekend.

Notes to know

  • Senior Brooke Wyderski hit her second home run of the season against Missouri.
  • Freshman Haley Hestekin picked up her first win of the weekend and second of the season against SJSU.
  • Reilley Peters, a freshman from Temecula, California, notched her second RBI of the season against Missouri.
