Wisconsin heads to Ames for 28th-annual meet

1. LAST TIME IN AMES: The Badgers competed in the Iowa State Classic last year, where the throwers and distance athletes dominated for Wisconsin. Senior Riley Budde was the runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 70 feet, 8 inches (21.54m) and he also threw 55-0 1/4 (16.77m) in the shot put to place 11th overall. In the mile, sophomore Oliver Hoare finished in 4:05.08 and senior Joe Hardy crossed the line in 4:05.15, both setting new personal bests to place third and fourth, respectively. Senior Malachy Schrobilgen was the runner-up in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:12.63, while teammate sophomore Ben Eidenschink finished fourth with a personal best time of 14:13.91.
2. HEPTATHLETES MAKING HISTORY: In their season debut, the Wisconsin heptathletes put up huge performances last weekend in Lincoln, as junior Trent Nytes and sophomore Zach Lorbeck both earned UW top-ten marks. Nytes was the top collegian in the heptathlon with a score of 5,656, which ranks fifth all-time at UW, and Lorbeck finished fourth overall with 5,611, which ranks sixth-best in program history.
3. LIGHTNING IN LINCOLN: At last weekend's Frank Sevigne Husker Invite, the Badgers put up strong performances all across the board. Sophomore Rashid Coulibaly cleared a new personal best of 17-1 1/2 (5.22m) in the pole vault to place fourth overall. In the 600 meters, senior Corbin Ellis placed third overall with a season best time of 1:18.56. The Badgers also saw three of their heptathletes finish in the top-ten, as Trent Nytes was the runner-up, Zach Lorbeck finished fourth, and sophomore Paul Afflitto placed eighth overall.
4. TOUGH COMPETITION: Wisconsin will face athletes from some of the highest-ranked schools this weekend in Ames. Five of the top-ten teams will be in attendance, including No. 1 Florida, No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 Alabama, No. 7 Penn State, and No. 8 Stanford.
5. SHELL SHOCKER: The Badgers will return to the Camp Randall Sports Center next weekend for their first home meet of the season. The Wisconsin Shell Shocker will kick off on Friday in a double-dual against Marquette and Northern Iowa with field events starting at 3 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m. Â
