Badgers drop pair of games in Texas

Wisconsin falls to Colorado State and Texas on day one of Texas Classic

AUSTIN, Texas – The Wisconsin softball team fell short on the first day of the Texas Classic, dropping a close 3-2 contest with Colorado State before Texas claimed a 5-1 victory Friday at McCombs Field.

Wisconsin vs. Colorado

The Badgers (0-2) started their season with a great first inning. A Kelsey Jenkins double proved lethal when Gabby Scherle laid down a beautiful bunt forcing a CSU defensive error allowing Jenkins to score. Scherle tacked on another run later in the inning thanks to a Stephanie Lombardo sac fly.

Colorado State (1-0) countered in the top of the second with a run of its own to cut Wisconsin's lead to 2-1. Another CSU run in the fourth tied things up at two apiece.

UW regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Brianna Flugaur scored off a Scherle single. The Badgers were in prime position to strike again with Brooke Wyderski on second and Scherle on third with one out, but a CSU double play ended the inning before they could tack on another run, taking a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning.

Once again Colorado State was quick to respond, sneaking two more runs in to lead, 4-3. The Badgers were unable to overcome the one-point deficit in the final two innings, dropping their first game of the year.

Wisconsin vs. Texas

Jenkins drew a walk to lead of the first inning, eventually advancing to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Taylor Johnson earned her first-career RBI when she singled to left field allowing Jenkins to put the Badgers on the board.

Texas (2-0) tied things up in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead with another run in the fourth. Hathaway hit a three-run homer over the right field wall to seal a 5-1 win.

Notes to know

-Freshman Haley Hestekin had her first career start on the mound against Colorado State.
