CLEARWATER, Fla. – On day one of the USF Under Armour Invitational, the Wisconsin softball team beat Central Michigan 5-2 before falling to the University of South Florida 3-1 Friday afternoon.
WISCONSIN VS. CENTRAL MICHIGAN
The Wisconsin bats came to life in the bottom of the third inning to put the Badgers on the board. Kelsey Jenkins led things off with a walk and advanced to second when Gabby Scherle hit a single to the pitcher. Senior Brooke Wyderski loaded the bases thanks to a single of her own with no outs. A passed ball allowed all three runners to advance, scoring Jenkins. Stephanie Lombardo hit UW's third single of the inning to score Scherle and Wyderski to give the Badgers a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth.
UW tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Melanie Cross reached base when she was hit by a pitch and three singles in a row from Brianna Flugaur, Taylor Johnson and Lauren Foster put Wisconsin up 5-0.
CMU stayed in the game with a run in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Wisconsin pitcher Haley Hestekin was able to minimize the damage and help the Badgers to a 5-2 win. The freshman recorded two strikeouts and no walks while pitching her fourth complete game of the season.
WISCONSIN VS. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA
Brooke Wyderski blasted her third home run of the season past the right field fence in the fourth inning to score Wisconsin's lone run against USF.
The Badgers were able to keep the Bulls off the board after the second inning, but USF's quick start proved critical in their 3-1 win. They were able to score one run in the first inning and two runs in the second frame to hand Wisconsin its eighth loss of the season.
In the circle, sophomore Kaitlyn Menz pitched a complete game with three strikeouts, no walks and allowed one earned run.
Batting cleanup - 4 notes to know
- Senior Kelsey Jenkins reached base for the 15th and 16th consecutive games by drawing a walk against CMU and USF.
- The Badgers out hit Central Michigan 9-5 en route to their eighth win of the season.
- Senior Brooke Wyderski collected a team-high three hits on the day including her 30th career home run.
- Junior Kelly Welsh hit a double and a single against USF for two of Wisconsin's three hits in the game.
