COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Wisconsin softball team (16-13 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) dropped a 7-0 contest to No. 24 Ohio State (21-8, 2-4) on Sunday morning that gave OSU the series victory.
Ohio State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second off of a sacrifice fly. The Buckeyes extended that lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth via two singles and an error. OSU sealed the victory in the bottom of the fifth when Shelby McCombs knocked out a grand slam to give Ohio State a 7-0 advantage.
The Badgers' best chance was in the top of the second when the bases were loaded, but they couldn't make anything of it and left the runners. UW also had a shot to score in the top of the first inning, when Taylor Johnson and Melanie Cross hit back-to-back singles, but were left stranded on the basepath.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Menz (8-8) took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings with two strikeouts but let up four earned runs. Freshman Haley Hestekin pitched 1.2 innings in relief and had one strikeout, while giving up one earned run.
Senior Kelsey Jenkins hit a double in the top of the seventh to extend her reached-base streak to 29 games.
