Wisconsin rowing for now and later at Clemson Invite
April 12, 2018 | Women's Rowing
Event moved up to Friday-Saturday due to weather
MADISON, Wis. – The No. 12 Wisconsin women's rowing team will trade in Madison's crazy 2018 spring weather for sunshine this weekend, traveling to Clemson, South Carolina, to compete against 21 crews from around the nation at the Clemson Invitational. Racing, originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15, on Lake Hartwell, has been moved up to Friday and Saturday due to the weather forecast.
As the Badgers draw closer to the Big Ten and NCAA championships, they look to strike a delicate balance between success in the upcoming races and reaching the long-term goal of hoisting a trophy at the end of the season.
"Obviously any time we compete, we are going there to win," head coach Bebe Bryans said. "That's the outcome that we're looking for. But really the process is the most important thing, and that's to keep making rhythmic progress and making progress executing the race plan.
"We can't look at this like a do-or-die thing; it's a process. If we get too wrapped up in the outcome right at this moment, we get stuck where we are in the process. That's our biggest challenge, for (coaches) and for the rowers, to just keep having fun and keep learning form experiences instead of getting stuck."
The Clemson Invitational features schools from nine conferences, including eight teams ranked in the top-20. Notable schools include No. 5 Ohio State, No. 10 Virginia and No. 14 USC, as well as teams the Badgers have already faced this season like Minnesota, UCF, Tulsa and Clemson.
"There's a lot of teams coming from all over the place," Bryans said, "so it will be a great opportunity for us to see where we are, where our progress is and where we stack up right now against everyone else's 'right now'."
At last year's event, Wisconsin finished third overall after sending all four boats to the A Finals. Wisconsin's second varsity eight brought home some hardware after receiving the Breakout Boat trophy, as voted by participating head coaches and fans on Twitter, for exceeding expectations and for going above and beyond what they were projected to do.
The Badgers will race on Saturday in flights designed to maximize cross-regional racing, aiming for the top tier finals held on Sunday.
