Lightweights look to defend conference team crown at Eastern Sprints
MADISON, Wis. – As the spring season begins to wind down with its last two races before the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships in June, the Wisconsin women's lightweight crew looks to take home the Konrad Ulbrich Team Points Trophy for the second year running at the Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges (EAWRC) Championship this Sunday.
Racing takes place on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Last weekend, Wisconsin made a showing at the SIRAs racing against all different crews including open-weights.
"An important part of being a successful lightweight team is going up against whomever. It allows you to enjoy racing and not worry about who is next to you," said women's lightweight rowing coach Dusty Mattison.
The Wisconsin boats had several runs down the racecourse over the weekend mostly racing themselves and the clock as they continued to build off and improve each race.
"Something that we've really talked about these last couple years is being able to be within yourselves and not focus necessarily outside of the boat too much. They are extreme racers and sometimes that can get in their way, so right now from race to race, it's about taking those elements and seeing what parts you need to really fine tune."
The team was able to make the tweaks last weekend to gear up for their one shot down the course at the EAWRC Championship. They are looking forward to putting what they have learned together and having a great performance.
"Eastern Sprints is our conference championship where we will pretty much see our main competition heading into IRAs. It will give us a good idea where we stand.
"As a whole, the team is looking pretty sharp."
Historically, the Badgers have shined at the EAWRC Championships—better known as the Eastern Sprints. UW's varsity eight holds eight championships, with six titles coming from 2005-10. The varsity four follows suit with four consecutive crowns from 2014-2017.
Last season, Wisconsin won Eastern Sprints with 38 points just ahead of Radcliffe with 35 points. UW had a pair of first-place finishes in the second varsity eight and the varsity four and two second-place finishes in the varsity eight and the third varsity eight.
