MADISON, Wis. – A trio of future Badgers met in the gold-medal game of the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship where Sampo Ranta and Team Finland secured the gold medal in a rematch of last year's title game, besting the USA, 3-2, at Traktor Ice Rink in Chelyabinsk, Russia on Sunday.
Ranta, a forward from Naantali, Finland, who has spent the season playing for the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers, tallied a power-play goal and an assist in seven games.
Ranta's gold meant a silver for Team USA, featuring Ty Emberson and K'Andre Miller on the blue line.
An Eau Claire native, Emberson served as an alternate captain for Team USA. He finished the tournament with four assists, one coming in the gold-medal game, and a +5 plus/minus rating.
A native of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Miller tallied a goal and two assists in the tournament, as well as 15 shots on goal from the blue line. One of his assists came in the 4-1 semifinal win over the Czech Republic.
Last year, Wisconsin freshmen
