Callie at the Catch: We are DANCING
May 17, 2018 | Women's Rowing
It's rowing all the time now that school is out for the summer
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- Last weekend was huge for us. With the Big Ten championships on Sunday and graduation on Saturday, our seniors did not get to attend commencement, but no fear, there was no place we would rather be than racing with the best teammates and the best university in the world at Big Tens.
Â
As a team we finished third overall, which is something we are super proud of and each boat had great performances starting from the very beginning. The first race down the course was the second novice eight event, which absolutely did not disappoint as it came down to the final few meters and an all out sprint for our boat to snag that third place and get that podium finish. This race set the tone for the rest of our races as it got us hyped up and ready to go.
Â
Our NCAA boats (1V8, 2V8, and 1V4) all finished fourth in hard fought races and each boat came off happy with what they did, knew they threw down the best piece they could that day and there are no regrets. Thankfully, we get a few more shots to come together even better, find places where we can drop a few splits, and really just throw it all out there because there is nothing to lose as we are heading to NCAAs for the 11th straight year!
Â
Watching the selection show was more nerve-racking than I hoped it would be, only because they announced the at-large bids in alphabetical order! And of course, W is pretty far down that list, but not last!
Â
We are so stoked for these next couple of weeks because we know where we are headed and know what it feels like to be in that atmosphere. Also being done with classes and finals makes a huge difference mentally and emotionally. There are now very few things we have to think about and the majority of it is rowing.
Â
We will head down to Sarasota, Florida, this Monday to get in a few practices in the extreme heat and acclimate ourselves just a bit. Racing begins on Friday with heats at Nathan Benderson Park, which is where we have been training over spring break the past two years, so we know this course well!
