Callie at the Catch: One Last Ro(w)deo

It's time for the NCAA extravaganza
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
SARASOTA, Fla. -- This past week our main focus and one goal was to gear up and prepare for our one last big event of the season, NCAAs. This is our last race weekend, our last time together as this team, and our last time to show how fast Wisconsin truly is. We are about to unleash because we know there is nothing to lose. This is what is most exciting.
We had one week at home on our own lake before heading down south. I think Lake Mendota knew what time of year it was for us and the importance of getting on the water meant for us as we were able to row on some beautiful water everyday. The best part about this past week, we did not have to worry about finals or school, so our minds and bodies were only focused on rowing. It made stress levels much lower and everyone much happier. Plus the free meals were not too bad either!
On our last row on Lake Mendota, and last one ever for the seniors, we had some fun racing pieces with the lightweights as they are also prepping for their big event, IRAs, in a few short weeks. This was super fun and let me tell you, all the boats out of Porter Boathouse are super fast!
Then phase two of our NCAA extravaganza came along and it was time to take our work from Madison down south to Sarasota, Florida, to get a few practices in, as well as get used to this heat and humidity as much as possible (I don't think I ever will!). Before the racecourse was open for practice, we rowed out of a local club team's boathouse, where we rigged our boats in an extreme downpour, but enjoyed every second of it because it cooled both the air and us down.
Next adventure came Wednesday as we set up into our NCAA hotel and made it to the course, the one we know so well, Nathan Benderson Park. Lucky for us, we have had the past three spring training trips here, which makes it nearly our second home. We love this course and cannot wait to race down it.
This course is one of my favorites, but with the NCAA signs, the amazing set up and being surrounded by the best teams in the nation, makes it even better.
Stay tuned as racing begins Friday morning with heats! Come on down to Sarasota or watch us race via live stream. You won't want to miss it!
