MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field trio of Ollie Hoare,
Trent Nytes and
Sawyer Smith will represent the Cardinal and White next week at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
It will mark the first time that Hoare, Nytes and Smith will compete at the NCAA outdoor meet, but Hoare and Nytes both competed at the NCAA indoor meet earlier this year.
A four-time Big Ten Conference champion this year, Hoare will race in the semifinals of the 1500 meters on Wednesday at 6:46 p.m. CT. The Sydney, Australia, native enters the meet with the NCAA's sixth-fastest time in the 1500 meters. His 3:37.84 ran at the Bryan Clay Invitational is a top-50 time in the world this year.
The top-five finishers and the next two-fastest time qualifiers will advance to the final of the 1500 meters on Friday at 7:42 p.m., which can be seen live on ESPN.
Nytes and Smith are both set to compete in the decathlon at the NCAA outdoor meet as UW is one of four schools to have multiple athletes in the decathlon. The decathlon starts at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday and wraps up on Thursday at 8:26 p.m.
A native of Kaukauna, Nytes enters as the No. 12 seed in the decathlon after recording a PR score of 7,683 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. He finished fifth in the decathlon at the Big Ten championships and earned Second-Team All-America honors in the heptathlon at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Smith will make his NCAA debut in the decathlon at Hayward Field, as the fifth-year senior is seeded No. 22 after putting up a score of 7,496 points at the Big Ten outdoor championships. The LaCrosse, native ranks No. 11 in school history in the 10-discipline event.
