Badgers open Big Ten play with top-25 draw

No. 22 Wisconsin and No. 12 Northwestern battle to 1-1 tie in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – The highly anticipated match-up between No. 22 Wisconsin (6-1-1) and No. 12 Northwestern (6-0-2) ended in a tie, 1-1, on Friday night at the McClimon Complex.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a goal from Michele Chernesky late in the first half, a lead they would hold heading into halftime.

But in her first goal of the season, Badger junior forward Dani Rhodes ended Northwestern's 28-day streak of no goals allowed, fielding and delivering on an assist from sophomore Maia Cella in 57th minute of play.  UW dominated play during the rest of regulation, but could not notch a game-winning strike. The two ranked teams went into double overtime and neither could break the draw.

Wisconsin keeper, Jordyn Bloomer, notched an impressive six saves on the night.

Sophomore Lauren Rice led the Badgers with six shots on goal. Wisconsin would outshoot the Wildcats 14 shots to nine.

Straight from the pitch:
Head coach Paula Wilkins:

On how the team fought:
"I thought our shape was way better, which is something that we talked about in the week of training. I was happy with our midfield and how we were able to move the ball a little bit better than we have in the past. I'm pleased with the resilience for them to come back and score a goal, Northwestern had only given up one goal in over 660 minutes so we kept the pressure on and attacked all night, which was good. We talked about another step, obviously you want to get three points in the Big Ten, but it's a very good Northwestern team with great senior leadership, so I'm proud that they came back.

On what the team can take away:
"I told the team that we have to bring tonight's effort all the time. This was probably their best game they've played all season and that standard is what we're going to expect every game."

Up next:
Wisconsin will remain at home on Sunday, September 16th as the Badgers will welcome Illinois for Pac the Mac at 12 p.m. CT. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased the day of the game at the McClimon Complex.
