No. 13 Badgers earn their best finish ever at Nutty
Meet Results
Madison, Wis. – It was a historic day for senior Alicia Monson and the 13th-ranked Wisconsin women's cross country team at the 11th-annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
Monson, the defending individual champion of the Nuttycombe, won her second-straight invitational win, pulling away over the last 2,000 meters. The senior from Amery, Wisconsin, covered the 6,000-meter race in 19 minutes, 39.3 seconds, to lead the Badgers to a fourth-place team finish. It was the program's best finish at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in the meet's history.
Monson took the lead over 2018 NCAA runner up Weini Kelati of New Mexico just after the 4000-meter mark and there was no letting up after that. Monson took full control, finishing nearly 10 seconds faster than Kelati. Last year, Monson became the first Badger to win the individual tile at the premier home meet and now she becomes the first Badger to win back-to-back individual titles.
The success didn't stop there!
Senior, Amy Davis improved 10 spots from last year, finishing 15th with a time of 20:14.0. Two other Badgers finished in the top 60, Aussie sophomore Lucinda Crouch finished 43rd in a time of 20:41.5 and senior Alissa Niggemann finished 59th with a time of 20:41.5.
True freshmen Alexa Westley and Victoria Heiligenthal were impressive again in a tough field that featured 20 of the top-30 ranked teams. Westley ran her third race of the season finishing 99th with a time of 21:16.9 in a strong field and Heiligenthal placed 130th with a time of 21:29.9. Redshirt freshman Peyton Sippy rounded out the Badgers championship race finishing 165th with a time of 21:47.9.
No. 1 Arkansas won the team title with 62 points, placing four runners in the top-10. Stanford took second with 98 points while North Carolina State rounded out the top-three teams with 203 points. Wisconsin finished fourth with 217 points as the top Big Ten team at the invitational.
In the B race
A pair of freshman finished top 25 for the Badgers. Sarah Shulze finished the 6,000-meter race in 21:40.5 and Shea Ruhly finished 24th with a time of 21:51.2.
- Two-time Nuttycombe champion Alicia Monson
"The women were awesome in both the seeded race and the open race, I think the women raced really well. We were here to execute on some pack tactics and try to progress some of those goals and I think the women bought into that really well and executed beautifully. It's always exciting for (Monson) to repeat. She came through some injuries in the spring and I think being able to get back to a space where she is really confident and firing at all cylinders. We are still working really hard and I think she feels like she's still has a lot of gas left in the tank so it was definitely a big day for her."

Straight from the course
"It's definitely a difficult course. You've got some hill elements in there so my strength definitely comes in well for that and also just the fact that I have so many Wisconsin fans out there. It definitely gave me a lot of confidence today. I went into it expecting to really capitalize on my strength and my base of running that I've had for the past summer, so I kind of just tried to make a statement out there and get going a lot earlier than I have in the past."- Two-time Nuttycombe champion Alicia Monson
