Lisbet’s Lane: Fall season under wraps

Badgers finish on the water and head into Porter Boathouse for the offseason
Senior and Madison, Wisconsin, native, Elisabet (Lisbet) Pietz is giving regular updates this year from the Porter Boathouse and around the country as the women's rowing team travels through the 2019-20 season. As a multi-seat recruit for the Badgers, this 2018 CRCA National Scholar Athlete stroked the second varsity eight to 12th place at the 2019 NCAA championships. Lisbet is the creative director for the group Student Athletes Equally Supporting Others, a student liaison for Badger Pride and aims to be a bilingual, culturally competent physical therapist.
MADISON, Wis. -- Winter isn't just coming, it has arrived! All of a sudden our alarm clocks are replaced by snow plows, and we must dig into our closets to find the scarves and mittens necessary for a walk to the boathouse at 5:30 a.m.
Walking to practice, my favorite trees are the ones that refuse to succumb to winter, and now they stand tall holding bunches of snow in addition to their colorful leaves. Akin to these trees, we have already survived two rounds of midterms, and we're about to come up on a third. Stubbornly, we hold our heads up and push into the onslaught of exams, essays and presentations.
Last Saturday marked our last day of the 20 hours per week fall schedule and a transition into eight hours per week of coach and athlete interaction. Although the official number of practice hours is decreasing, our mental discipline is increasing. It is up to the team to figure out how to maintain the fitness we have worked for all of fall on our own schedules.
I always look forward to this time of year because it provides the opportunity to connect with teammates over our shared commitment to getting faster! As a member of the senior class, it is up to us to bring the younger classes under our wings, or should I say paws? Now is our chance to show them what a Badger does once the ground freezes over.
Looking back at our fall season, we have a lot to be proud of.
During the Milwaukee River Challenge, our freshmen experienced their first win as Badgers, and our sophomores started off their first year on varsity with a strong finish. Moving forward, we traveled to Indiana for a scrimmage with Iowa and Indiana. That scrimmage gave varsity the opportunity to narrow down our lineup for the Charles and gave our speedy little freshmen their first out-of-state experience!
I always enjoy the experience of seeing different boathouses and bodies of water. However, it is always refreshing to return home to Lake Mendota. Somehow, no other lake can measure up.
Two weeks later our varsity eight traveled to Boston to compete at the Head of the Charles Regatta. The leaves had just started to change color and the water was the flattest I have ever seen it. We treated the Charles as a business trip spending less than 30 hours total in Boston!
That same weekend, the rest of the team drove down to Notre Dame. They had a fantastic experience and Notre Dame was a wonderful host.
Finally, we rounded out the season by hosting a snowy scrimmage with Minnesota.
As a senior, knowing that I've finished my last fall on the team brings up some feelings of sadness, but I am also filled with pride at the ways my team has stepped up to every challenge placed before them. I can't wait to see how everyone continues to grow as individuals and get faster this winter. Everyone on this team has huge potential, and it is up to us to help them discover it!
Winter, I am talking to you when I say BRING ON THE SNOW!
