Undefeated no more, Badgers douse Irish

Lebedeff records first shutout of season

MADISON, Wis. -- History repeats itself with the No. 15 Wisconsin men's hockey team knocking off No. 4 Notre Dame, ending the Fighting Irish's undefeated record and breaking their win streak. Three Badger goals and a shutdown by the defense led the Badgers to a 3-0 victory Friday night at the Kohl Center.

Like they did two seasons ago, when the Badgers snapped Notre Dame's 16-game win streak and ended its 13-0-0 Big Ten record, UW finished off Notre Dame's eight-game unbeaten streak to start the season and handed ND its first conference loss of the year.

Sophomore goalie Daniel Lebedeff returned to home ice as comfortable as ever Friday night as he and the Badger defense held off all scoring attempts from the Fighting Irish, making it the first shutout of the season for Lebedeff. Wisconsin's defense only allowed 22 shots on goal, and Lebedeff blocked them all.

Freshman forward Cole Caufield notched the first goal for the Badgers in the first period on a Wisconsin power play. Caufield squared up the rebound from K'Andre Miller's shot and put it top shelf to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead after one.

Roman Ahcan would record his fifth goal on the season in the second period with the Badgers on the power play, putting Wisconsin up 2-0 at the second break. Freshman Alex Turcotte assisted on both Caufield's and Ahcan's goals for his fifth multi-point game.

Linus Wiessbach sealed the win for Wisconsin with an empty net goal in the third.

Notes to know:
  • Alex Turcotte recorded his third consecutive multi-point game.
  • Wisconsin was 100 percent on special teams, scoring two power-play goals and killing one power play. Notre Dame's penalty kill had allowed just one power-play goal over its first eight games.
  • Cole Caufield's goal, his ninth of the season, pulls him into a five-way tie for the national scoring lead.
Straight from the rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato:

"The good thing about tonight was when we were in control of the game at different points we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot by taking a penalty or making a mistake. It was probably our most complete game against a team that's really really good. They're hard to play against and we did a good job."

Freshman Forward Cole Caufield on the power play:
"They're very aggressive (on the penalty kill) and we took that to our advantage tonight. You saw both of our goals tonight, we're getting pucks closer to the net. I think we were too passive in our last couple games. So just being more aggressive and shooting the puck more. We were good tonight and hopefully we can keep going tomorrow."

Sophomore Goalie Daniel Lebedeff on stopping the late Notre Dame breakaway to preserve the shutout:
"I noticed the guy on the corner. It kind of came to me as a surprise but I was still kind of locked in. You play the game till it's over. He clearly showed me that he was going to five hole, clear as a day."

Sophomore Forward Roman Ahcan on the power-play changes:
"Yeah I mean we were struggling a little bit so we just tried to give it another look. We emphasized on getting on pucks when it's in the corner and that's what happened, we won a battle in the corner got the puck to the net and good things happen there. We banged the rebound home and I think we're improving."

Up next: Wisconsin will play a rematch with the Fighting Irish Saturday night at the Kohl Center. The game will play host to the third annual BMO Harris Bank Teddy Toss. Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal to the game and throw it on the ice afterwards. All stuffed animals will be donated to Toys for Tots. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. and can be streamed on BTN+ with a broadcast available WIBA 1310. Live stats available at uwbadgers.com and see live updates by following @BadgerMHockey on Twitter.
