MADISON, Wis. -- After knocking off the undefeated Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-1-1, 4-1-1-0 Big Ten) Friday night, the No. 15 Badger men's hockey team (6-6-0, 1-3-0-0 Big Ten) hoped to sweep the No. 4 ranked team in the nation with a win Saturday night. However, an overtime period and a matter of inches sent the Badgers home with a series split after a 5-4 loss Saturday night at the Kohl Center.
Tied at four at the end of regulation, Wisconsin had an answer to just about everything Notre Dame put in its path, but it was
Cole Caufield's overtime breakaway shot that was cleared away from the goal line, then an Irish goal shortly after that sealed the win for Notre Dame.
The rematch between the Badgers and Irish proved to be a game of momentum changes. When Notre Dame scored 34 seconds into the game, freshman
Dylan Holloway answered with a goal of his own. Wisconsin would continue to go back an forth with the Irish including goals by
Linus Weissbach and
Wyatt Kalynuk, but it was
K'Andre Miller's third period shot that would give Wisconsin its first lead.
Notre Dame's Colin Theisen snuck a shot past sophomore goalie
Daniel Lebedeff to force overtime against Wisconsin for the first time this season.
Other Badger point-getters included two assists from Caufield and assists each for
Owen Lindmark,
Sean Dhooghe,
Alex Turcotte,
Tyler Inamoto and
Ty Emberson.
Notes to know:
- Wisconsin trailed three times during Saturday's game and were able to comeback and take a lead in the third period
- Freshman Alex Turcotte has points in four consecutive games.
- Wisconsin won the special teams battle with one power-play goal and two successful penalty killsÂ
Straight from the rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato:
"We played well enough to win. We played a great team. There were lots of parts of the game when we fell behind and it looked like they were taking over but we found a way to get back in it."
"But it was a great weekend, the atmosphere in the building both nights from our fans and the Crease Creatures, the students, was what we were hoping for and they saw great hockey. Unfortunately tonight we didn't get that bounce in overtime, but I was proud of the way the guys prepared this week to be ready for it."
Freshman forward Cole Caufield:
"Every time you shoot you're looking to score so obviously the puck bounces weren't really going our way tonight and that's going to happen so you just gotta keep battling- keep doing that and they'll come. Not too worried about it right now, obviously it's a tough way to end a game."
Sophomore Defenseman K'Andre Miller:
"We just stuck to our game plan all game and that was one of the things we wanted to go into this weekend trying to prove. Both games I thought we played full 60-minute games. It was a fun atmosphere to play in and we were really a band of brothers, did it for one another."
Junior Captain Defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk:
"Definitely stings. We had our chances all game. We had our breakaways and a lot of chances to bury it, even right before they scored we had that one on the goal line. Obviously it sucks a lot. They're a good team, but we definitely had our chances."
Up next: Wisconsin will be on the road again next weekend versus the Minnesota Golden Gophers for its second Big Ten road series. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. both nights with Friday night's game available on Fox Sports Wisconsin and Saturday nights game on FOX Sports Wisconsin+.
