1. MORE FOR MONSON: It has been a historic season for UW senior cross country runner Alicia Monson. Just this season, the five-time All American has placed 2nd at the Joe Piane Invitational, defended her Nutty title, defended her B1G title, defended her Regional title, has been named B1G Athlete of the week twice, U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Athlete of the Week and NCAA Great Lakes Regional Women's Athlete of the Year. She looks to make history this weekend by becoming an NCAA individual champion, UW's first since 1999. Monson finished fourth at last year's nationals and the team placed tenth.
2. REGIONALS RECAP: Wisconsin's one-two punch of Alicia Monson and Amy Davis led Wisconsin women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the 2019 Great Lakes Regional on Friday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. Monson, defended her 2018 individual title, finishing the 6000-meter race in 19 minutes, 59.9 seconds to lead the way for the Badgers. Davis was not far behind, finishing third overall with a time of 20:07.4. Alisa Niggemann, Lucinda Crouch, Peyton Sippy, Alexa Westley and Kristen Garcia also competed for the Badgers.
3. RANKED RUNNERS: The USTFCCCA released national and regional coaches poll last week, placing Wisconsin at No. 11 nationally and No. 3 in the Great Lakes Region after the Badgers placed third behind Michigan State and Michigan at last weekends Great Lakes Regional.
4. MACK'S MINUTE: "As coach Byrne said, 30th time for the women to go to the National Championships, very proud of our runs at the Great Lakes Regional last week. For Alicia Monson to come through and defend her title was great. Huge performance from Amy Davis, loved seeing her sprint those last 100 meters and run with the kind of confidence that we've been building up all year. Some really gutsy, tough runs from Alissa Niggemann and Lucinda Crouch to kind of round out our top four. Neither of those runners had the races of their seasons, they were feeling a little worse for wear but did the job and did it well. And then break through performances from red-shirt freshman Peyton Sippy, true freshman Alexa Westley and sophomore Kristen Garcia to be our five, six, seven. Those women really stepped up to the plate when we needed them and that's something we have been working on all season. Very proud of that team effort and our women are looking ahead to the biggest, most exciting cross country race in the land at the National Championships and feeling like they want to go and compete with the very best women in the country. They are ranked eleventh right now which I think they all want to see if they can go out there and be a little higher than that." – Head Coach Mackenzie Wartenberger
5. LAST ONE, FAST ONE: This weekend marks the final cross country race for superb seniors, Amy Davis, Alicia Monson and Alissa Niggemann. All three seniors have had standout cross country careers over the last few years and look to make their mark this weekend at NCAAs. But they wont be done yet! All three seniors will finish out their collegiate running careers this spring after track season concludes.
