Tarek Baker and
K'Andre Miller to tie up the game in the third period and senior goaltender
Jack Berry to hold the Gophers scoreless. Baker's goal acted as a huge momentum swing coming just 18 seconds into the third period.
The game would need extra time, including scoreless five-on-five and three-on-three overtimes before Medina, Minnesota, native Zimmer got the call in the third round of the sudden-death shootout. Zimmer laced the puck through the legs of Minnesota's Jack LaFontaine who stopped numerous overtime chances and breakaways. The forward also recorded an assist on Baker's goal that got the comeback started.
Berry was also perfect throughout overtime, blocking 35 shots on the night.
Other Badger scorers included captain
Wyatt Kalynuk with two assists, alongside
Linus Weissbach and
Sean Dhooghe with one assist each.
Notes to know:
- Zimmer's goal was his third shootout winner since the start of last season
- Kalynuk's two-assist game puts him at three multi-point games on the season and 15 on his career
- The two-goal comeback marked the first for a tie since Jan. 27, 2018 when UW trailed 3-1 to Penn State and forged a 4-4 tie.
Straight from the rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato:
"Overtime was exciting, three-on-three was exciting, the shootout was exciting. It was a pretty fun night of college hockey."
On Jack Berry:
"He hasn't played a full game in a long time and especially when you get to three-on-three and a shootout, he made a lot of clutch save at different points in the game. Jack was outstanding."
