MADISON, Wis. – Trent Hillger of the seventh-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team was named the Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week after his performance over No. 3 Tate Orndorff out of Utah Valley, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Â
This is the redshirt sophomore's first weekly conference award and the first for a Badger since the 2016-17 season. Hillger currently has an undefeated record at 6-0, including two falls and a major decision.Â
Â
Hillger and Orndorff were tied at the end of regulation, both recording an escape from the bottom position. The first overtime period passed and still no score, but Hillger changed that quickly in the second overtime period. He took down Orndorff and recorded his second pin of the season in eight minutes, 18 seconds.
Â
"Trent is very deserving of this honor. Thank you to the Big Ten for recognizing him and Wisconsin wrestling," said Wisconsin head coach,
Chris Bono.
Â
Hillger's performance also bumped him up in the FloWrestling rankings. Going into the weekend, Wisconsin's heavyweight was ranked eighth but following his dramatic pin, he moved up to No. 3 in the polls. He will face off against No. 12 Tony Cassioppi this weekend in Iowa.
The Badgers (6-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) face No. 1 Iowa (2-0, 0-0) in Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday at 7 p.m. from Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The dual airs live on Big Ten Network.
