Badgers in the NHL: Cameron Hughes NHL debut
November 07, 2019 | Men's Hockey, NHL Badgers
Hughes became the 85th former Badger to play in the NHL
MADISON, Wis. — Two years ago, Cameron Hughes (2014-18) suited up for his fourth and final season with the Wisconsin men's hockey team. On Monday night, Hughes skated in his first NHL contest with the Boston Bruins, helping the team in a 6-4 victory over the Pittsburg Penguins.
Â
The Bruins called up the rookie forward following his impressive performance on the Providence Bruins. In 52 games played last season, the former Badgers put up 13 goals and 15 assists, totaling 28 points. He has six points in 13 games with Providence this season.
Â
Hughes served as captain of the Badgers his senior year after an outstanding junior season, racking up seven goals and 25 assists for 32 points. He was a consistent forward for the Badgers all four years.
Â
In making his NHL debut, Hughes became the 85th player in Badger history to reach the NHL, joining 12 others this season. That total became 14 when Ottawa's Cody Goloubef skated in his first game of 2019-20 on Tuesday.
Hughes was selected by the Bruins in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, following his freshmen year with the Badgers. Trent Frederic (2016-18), another former Badger, was also drafted by the Bruins, making his NHL debut with Boston in a 15-game stint last year.
Â
Hughes did not play Tuesday night in the Bruins match up against the Montreal Canadians, and was returned to Providence on Wednesday.
Â
The Wisconsin Badgers are looking to bounce back from a pair of losses at Penn State when they go head to Omaha this weekend.
