Romania native and Badger transfer prepares for new season
MADISON-- A Romania native and Badger sophomore this year, Antonela Stoica has been playing tennis since she was six years old. The sport holds some of her favorite memories and now she gets to continue making those memories in Madison.
Â
Stoica is planning to major in Marketing during her time at UW and the school alongside the successful tennis program was a big initial attraction for her.
Â
"I know that the Business school here is very good and there could be many job opportunities."
Â
Stoica says she wants to go as far as she can with tennis after college but would love a job in marketing as well.
Â
Although a sophomore, this is Stoica's first year as a Badger being a transfer student from Texas Tech. When thinking about what it meant to be a Badger, Stoica said, "UW-Madison is very good both academically and for tennis." She also couldn't resist the amazing sights of Memorial Union, which she says is her favorite spot on campus because of the terrace and the food.
Â
On the court, Stoica has been an excellent addition for the Badgers so far this year. She boasts the highest win percentage eon the team recording a 6-4 overall record in throughout the fall tournaments.
Â
Stoica credits a lot of that success to her parents who she calls her biggest supporters growing up in the tennis world.
Â
Stoica says her favorite tennis memory is, "Winning an under-16 Tennis tournament in Europe when I was 14 by beating a Romanian girl in the final that was considered the best in the country at our age back then."
Â
When it comes to this season, she describes the team as "cheerful" saying, "when I see them happy it makes me happier too."
Â
A team goal for her is for Wisconsin to return to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row, but according to her, her individual goal is; "To play my tennis style during matches, being aggressive, without backing off."
Â
"It means a lot to me to be part of such a prestigious university and program."
