No. 1 Badgers drop opener at Bemidji State

Steffen scores lone goal in setback

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback on Friday to Bemidji State at the Sanford Center.

After a scoreless first period Mekenzie Steffen gave the Badgers (23-4-0, 13-4-0-0 WCHA) a 1-0 lead. The junior scored from the top of the right circle midway through the period, marking her third goal in as many games.

However, BSU (10-15-2, 7-8-2-0 WCHA) would counter with a goal four minutes after Steffen's strike as Jacqueline Kaasa scored to tie the game heading into the third.

BSU's Lydia Passolt scored a power-play goal midway through the third period and UW peppered the BSU net with several chances with netminder Kristen Campbell pulled, but were unable to tie things up.

UW head coach Mark Johnson
On the game:

"I thought we had a good week of preparation and we came out and we didn't capitalize on our opportunities, especially on the power play. We gave up two shots in the third period, one of them goes in off a deflection and that ends up being the game winner."

On the series finale:
"To be successful, we have to outwork our opponent. We talked about that all week and I don't think we did that for 60 minutes. We did it in stretches, we played well in the third period. Again, its about the ability to track pucks, win battles and we didn't do enough of those things tonight."

Up Next:
The Badgers and Beavers wrap up their series on Saturday with a 3 p.m. CT contest at the Sanford Center. Fans can watch the game live on FloHockey.
