MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's hockey rookie duo of
Britta Curl and
Sophie Shirley earned WCHA player of the week honors after leading the Badgers to a sweep of Minnesota State, the league announced Tuesday.
Curl was named the WCHA Forward of the Week after a four-point weekend for the Cardinal and White while Shirley was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week after posting a league-high three goals last weekend.
A native of Bismarck, North Dakota, Curl enjoyed another great weekend, scoring a pair of goals while adding two helpers in UW's sweep of Minnesota State at LaBahn Arena.
Curl tied a career high with three points in UW's 7-2 win on Friday when she scored a goal and two assists, and also tied a career-high with a +3 plus/minus rating. Curl collected another goal in UW's 4-1 win on Saturday to extend her goal streak to three games.
Her four points last weekend were tied for second in the WCHA while her points-per-game average of 2.00 was tied for the league high with linemate
Annie Pankowski.
Shirley scored three of UW's 11 goals last weekend in the sweep.
She scored her first goal of the weekend in UW's 7-2 win on Saturday before adding a two-goal effort in Sunday's 4-1 win.
A native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, her three goals last weekend were the most by any WCHA skater, while her plus/minus rating was tied for the best by a WCHA rookie. In addition, Shirley's .500 shooting percentage was the best by any rookie in the WCHA.
