Senior shows off and sets records at home

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin women's track and field senior Banke Oginni made program history in front of a home crowd on Friday at the Red and White Classic, one of UW's final meets before postseason action.

Oginni was given a warm welcome when she took the throwing ring as the crowd began a slow clap for the senior thrower and she put on a show for them. Oginni threw for a personal best and school record 73 feet, 3 1/4 inches (22.33 meters) in the weight throw, giving her the win. She broke Olympian Kelsey Card's record of 72-7 3/4 (22.14m). Oginni's throw currently ranks No. 5 in the NCAA this season and No. 3 in the Big Ten Conference.

Hanna Barton set a personal record in the weight throw, following a 61-1 ½ (18.63m) throw. This put the senior thrower in fourth place on the day.

Oginni also won women's shot put with a 51-10 (15.80m) throw. Josie Schaefer also competed and took third thanks to a 50-8 1/4 (15.54m) throw.

The Badgers finished 1-2-3 in the women's long jump. Armoni Brown won and tied her personal best with a 20-0 1/2 (6.11 meters) jump, which ranks No. 6 in program history. UW Director of Track and Field Mick Byrne
On the Red and White Classic:

"As everyone knows, we don't get a lot of opportunities to run here at home. It seems like we're on the road a lot, and we don't see a lot of these 200-meter flat tracks anymore, now they're mostly all banked tracks. Those are fun, but being at home in this little environment and having our home fans, like parents, grandparents and Badger fans is really fun for our kids. There's a lot of people here today and that's really fun for our kids. It's a great opportunity for them to compete at home."

On Banke Oginni's school record:
"Hopefully for Banke it means, that she'll have a lot of confidence going into Big Tens. Her throw today ranks No. 5 in the NCAA, so going into next weekend, she'll have a lot of confidence going in. It doesn't matter what sport you play, it's all about confidence. A conference title would be awesome, and then two weeks later, she's going to be in the NCAA meet now, so that's exciting. Hopefully she can go to that meet and be successful."

On the upcoming Big Ten Indoor Championships:
"We always look at this meet as one more opportunity for our kids to get on the bus to Big Tens next week. Our goal is always to increase that number. The maximum is 32 and we challenge that to the athletes at the beginning of the year. We haven't given them that number in quite a few years, but again, with that challenge, let's get more and more kids on the bus. This is the final opportunity for our athletes to do that."

Up Next:
The Badgers will send a distance medley relay squad to the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame on Saturday, February 16. After this weekend, Wisconsin will gear up for championship season, beginning with the Big Ten Indoor Championships next weekend in Ann Arbor.
