Football video coordinator selected by peers as conference's best for 2018
MADISON, Wis. — The Collegiate Sports Video Association on Tuesday named John Schaefer, Wisconsin's coordinator of football video and technology, the 2018-19 Big Ten Conference Video Coordinator of the Year.
Schaefer was selected by his peers in the Big Ten to receive the Conference Video Coordinator of the Year honor. He is now a finalist for the prestigious Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year award, which will be announced at the annual CSVA banquet on May 15Â in Anaheim, California.
The Bob Matey award is presented to the video coordinator who displays innovation, determination, perseverance and technical skill as portrayed by the late Bob Matey, longtime video coordinator at Texas A&M.
Schaefer's award comes on the heels of the Badgers' staff being recognized by CSVA with the 2018 SAVVY Award for best motivational video. Assistant football video coordinator Colin Ludema produced the winning video, "Iowa Hit Tape," with assistance from Schaefer, Jerry Mao and Brandon Spiegel.
Schaefer is in his seventh year as video coordinator with the Wisconsin football program, overseeing the team's video and technology efforts. He has been a member of CSVA since 2013.
Schaefer leads a staff responsible for filming, editing and maintaining archives of the Badgers' practices and games while also providing produced video content to meet the needs of coaches and recruiting staff.
Schaefer joined the Badgers in 2013 after spending three years on the football video staff at Western Michigan, including the 2012 season as the Broncos' head video coordinator. He spent six total seasons in Kalamazoo, working as a student assistant coach with the Broncos' offensive line from 2007-09 before transitioning to the video staff.
A native of Mount Clemens, Michigan, Schaefer earned a degree in mathematics with a minor in communications from Western Michigan in 2011.
