Wisconsin women’s track team set to compete in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wisconsin women's track and field team wrap up the 2019 indoor season at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the NCAA Indoor Championships will be held at the CrossPlex Facility from Friday, March 8 through Saturday, March 9.
The meet will be broadcast live on ESPN3. In addition, fans can follow along on Instagram and Twitter (@BadgerTrackXC) and can catch a recap following the meet on UWBadgers.com.
1. LAST YEAR AT NCAA's: At the national meet last year, Banke Oginni was named to second-team All-America following her 12th place finish in weight throw and 16th-place finish in the shot put. Amy Davis and Alicia Monson both competed in the 5000 meters, coming in 11th and 13th place respectively.
2. MARVELOUS MONSON: Alicia Monson has enjoyed a breakout season as she swept the distance events at the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships to earn Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships honors. Monson won the 3K in a stifling 9 minutes, 16.73 seconds, while she won the 5K in 16.18.63. A native of Amery, Wisconsin, Monson now owns three Big Ten titles after her win in cross country last fall.
3. BRILLIANT BANKE: Senior thrower, Banke Oginni is headed back to the national meet after qualifying in both shot put and weight throw. Oginni set a school record earlier this year in weight throw, tossing for 73 feet, 3 ¼ inches at the Red and White Classic. Banke also set a personal best in shot put following a 55-7 ½ throw.
4. GOING THE DISTANCE (MEDLEY RELAY): At the Alex Wilson Invitational, the women's DMR consisting of Alissa Niggemann, Gabby DesRosiers, Bianca Stubler and Alicia Monson broke the school record that was set in 1996. The quartet ran the relay in 10:59.72 to become the first UW team to finish under 11 minutes.
5. HEADING OUTDOORS: After the conclusion of the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships, the Badgers will start to prepare for the outdoor season. The first outdoor meet of the season for Wisconsin will be the Aztec Invitational on Saturday, March 23.
