Badgers await national championships selections on Tuesday evening

WORCESTER, Mass. --  Wisconsin men's rowing entered the weekend at the 2019 Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond looking to secure a spot in the 2019 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships.

After Sunday's performance, the Badgers will have to wait until Tuesday to evening to find out if they did enough to earn that spot.

Wisconsin ended up 12th as a team in the Rowe Cup standings for the overall team champion. UW's top two boats, the varsity eight and second varsity eight, both placed 14th, taking second in their respective third-level finals.

The third varsity eight ended up 10th, taking fourth in the petite final. The fourth varsity eight was eight, finishing second in the petite final.

In the fifth varsity eight, an event with six entries, the Badgers crossed the 2000-meter finish line in fifth place.

The IRA selection show airs Tuesday evening, May 21, at 6 p.m. CT on locallive.tv.

Head coach Chris Clark

'We had a tough go at the Sprints. Our youth, lack of water time, and quality race experiences really caught up with us. Of the boats that had heats, all four did poorly in the first race. Consequently, those same four raced much better in the afternoon. That kind of pattern isn't random, it speaks to not enough confidence and veteran leadership. While we have a team of eager guys, no one has really done it before so they don't know the path. We are on the bubble for our national championships. I sure hope these kids can go. They need all the racing they can get.'
