Five things to know: Badgers set to compete at Big Ten Championships

Wisconsin women’s track and field begins championship season

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Championship season for the Badgers begins this weekend in Iowa City, Iowa, as the Wisconsin women's track and field team will compete at the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Action on Friday begins at noon, while events on Saturday begin at 9:30 a.m. and the final day of the championships start at 11 a.m.

1. BANKE'S BIG DAY At the Wisconsin Alumni Classic, Banke climbed further up in the school history book. She took second place in hammer throw with a mark of 193 feet, 1 inch to move up to third best in school history  Oginni also won shot put with a 55-5 3/4 mark, a season-best throw for the senior captain. Her shot put heave also was the third-best throw in the country last weekend. 

2. LAST YEAR AT BIG TENS: The Badgers tied for fifth place with 60 points at the conference championship last season. A pair of juniors earned runner-up finishes at last year's meet as Alicia Monson took second in the 5000 meters while Rayce Albino was runner up in pole vault with a mark of 13 feet, 6 1/4 inches, finishing behind Wisconsin alum, Taylor Amann.

3. REALLY GOOD RELAYS: The Badger relay squads have been rewriting the school history book all season. UW set school records in both the 4x200 and 4x400 relays this year while they have three of its four members back from last year's 4x100 relay squad that broke the school record at the NCAA outdoor championships. 

4. SENIOR SENDOFF: The Wisconsin women's track team sent the senior Badgers off right at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic. The team brought home 11 event wins at the final home meet of the season.

5. OFF TO REGIONALS: Following Big Tens, the Badgers will send athletes to Sacramento, California, for the 2019 NCAA West Preliminary Championships, May 23-25. The top-48 student-athletes in each event and the top 24 relay squads will qualify for the meet that serves as the qualifer for the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships next month in Austin, Texas.
