MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin swimming and diving program has tabbed up-and-coming coach Trevor Maida to complete its coaching staff for the 2019-20 season.
UW head coach Yuri Suguiyama announced the hire of Maida on Wednesday. He joins newly-hired diving coach Landon Marzullo and returning assistants Kristy Brager, Jennah Haney and Erik Posegay in rounding out the staff for Suguiyama's second season at the helm of the Badgers program.
"We've been following Trevor's career for a while now and we're thrilled to add him to our staff," Suguiyama said. "In just a short time he's been able to work with and impact some really elite-level athletes. His passion, expertise and care for student-athletes and their experience are perfectly in-tune with what our program at Wisconsin is all about."
Maida spent the 2018-19 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Indiana, where he helped the Hoosiers sweep the men's and women's Big Ten titles for the first time in school history. While at Indiana, Maida had the opportunity to coach Olympic gold medalist and world record-holder Lilly King, who won her fourth straight NCAA titles in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. He also worked with American record-holder Ian Finnerty, who repeated as NCAA champion in the men's 100 breaststroke and swept the Big Ten breaststroke titles.
Maida also assisted in the Hoosiers' recruiting efforts and served as the program's social media director.
Prior to Indiana, Maida began his collegiate coaching career by spending two and a half seasons as a student assistant at St. Bonaventure, his alma mater. After an injury effectively ended his career as a swimmer during his freshman year, Maida transitioned to the deck and served as the Bonnies' primary distance coach while also assisting head coach Sean McNamee in a variety of roles ranging from scheduling to recruiting.
"I couldn't be more excited and grateful for the opportunity to work with Yuri, the staff and the student-athletes at the University of Wisconsin," Maida said. "The Badgers are an outstanding team with an environment that is built to produce at an elite level. I can't wait to get to work and make an impact from the start.
"I would like to thank Ray Looze, the staff and all the student-athletes at Indiana University for everything they taught me this past year; as well as Coach Mac and the swimmers at St. Bonaventure, who helped me establish myself as a coach.
"The future is bright in Madison. On, Wisconsin!"
