Five Things to Know: Badgers at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Hoare, McDonald and Nytes to compete in Texas this week

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field trio of Olli Hoare, Morgan McDonald and Trent Nytes will compete at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 5-8, in Austin, Texas.

1. READY TO REPEAT: Junior Olli Hoare enters this year's NCAA meet as the reigning champion in the 1500 meters and as the NCAA leader in the event with a school-record time of 3 minutes, 37.20 seconds. The Sydney, Australia, native looks to become the 15th athlete to repeat as the champion in the event and he also looks to become the second Badger to win consecutive titles in the 1500 meters as UW legend Don Gehrmann won three-straight tiles from 1948-1950. Hoare will race in the semifinals of the 1500 meters on Wednesday night with the finals to take place on Friday night.

2. MORGAN'S ON A MISSION: Senior Morgan McDonald could make history this weekend at Mike A. Myers Stadium as he looks to become only the third NCAA men's athlete to win individual titles in cross country, the indoor 5000 meters and the outdoor 5000 meters in the same season. The only other two to accomplish the feat are Oregon's Galen Rupp (2008-09) and Edward Cheserek (2015-16). McDonald also looks to become the eighth athlete in NCAA history to sweep the indoor and outdoor 5K titles in the same season and the second Badger (Chris Solinsky, 2007). The senior will race for the final time for UW on Friday night at 9:25 p.m.

3. NYTES TIME TO SHINE: Senior Trent Nytes looks to end his Badger career on a high note at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the Kaukauna, Wisconsin, native enters the meet as the No. 10 seed in the decathlon with a season-best score of 7,618 points. Nytes has been consistent in the grueling two-day event as he's posted scores above 7,600 points three times in his career, including at last year's NCAA outdoor meet. Only two other Badgers (Zach Ziemek and Greg Gill) can say they've posted multiple scores of at least 7,600 points while at UW.  Nytes is the first Badger in action at nationals as the decathlon begins on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. and continues on Thursday at 1 p.m.

4. NEW PLACE FOR NATIONALS: For the first time since 2004, the University of Texas will serve as host for the NCAA outdoor track and field championships. This year marks the seventh time Texas has hosted the national outdoor champions and the school will also host the 2020 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This year's meet also marks the first time since 2012 that the NCAA meet has not been held in Eugene, Oregon.

5. HOW TO WATCH: ESPN will provide comprehensive coverage of the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as every track and field event can be seen online via ESPN3. In addition, track events on Wednesday can be seen on ESPNU, with Thursday's competition split between ESPNU and ESPN2. Action on Friday can be seen live on ESPN, while the final day of the meet on Saturday can be seen live on ESPN2. The full schedule of when the Badgers compete is below.
