Badgers battle No. 4 team in the country in Big Ten opener

Hoosiers outscore Badgers, 3-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Wisconsin men's soccer team (2-5-0) traveled to the home turf of the No. 4 team in the country and gave Indiana (4-0-2) all it could handle. The Badgers held their own, but succumbed to the Hoosiers, 3-1.

The Hoosiers set the pace of the game early, scoring in the ninth minute off of a penalty kick. A tough Indiana defense kept UW from scoring, but the Badger defense was able to do the same the remainder of the first half. Following that first goal, Dean Cowdroy recorded three saves against a relentless Hoosier offense and Bobby Harris nearly evened the score just before half when his strike bounced off the post.

Most of the action was left for the last 20 minutes of the match. Sophomore and Wisconsin native, Matthew Comiskey score his first career goal on a header in the 76th minute. With help from the assist of Michael Russell II and Elan Koenig, the Badgers overcame their offensive drought after not scoring in their previous two games.

Indiana answered that goal quickly by scoring in the 78th minute. The Badgers had some promising looks, but were unable to find the equalizer. In the final seconds of the game, Indiana secured the win by scoring another goal. Wisconsin proved that they could hang with a top-10 team in their Big Ten opener.

"It was a good Big Ten match. I was very pleased with many moments of the game but credit Indiana, once we tied it they found a set piece goal and effectively killed off the game. We'll learn from this and obviously Jerry Yeagley Field is a tough place to play," says head coach John Trask.

Up Next:
The Badgers will host two games next week. The first against in-state rival Marquette, Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. (CT).

The second game of the week is against reigning NCAA champion Maryland, in a Pac the Mac Friday feature. The Wisconsin men's soccer team will kick off at 7:30 p.m. (CT) after the completion of the women's soccer game, which begins at 5 p.m. Admission, good for both games, is $1.
