MADISON, Wis. - The women's cross country team is on the road for the first time this year for the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Friday in Chicago. The women hit the ground running at 10:50 a.m. for the 5000-meter race.

1. IMPRESSIVE OPENING: The Badgers made a bold statement in their season-opening meet on Sept. 6, tallying a perfect score to win the Badger Classic. Freshman Alexa Westley was victorious in her first collegiate contest, crossing the line in 21 minutes, 58.2 seconds. Teammate Sarah Shulze, running unattached, was right by her side, completing the 6K course in 21:58.5. Fellow freshman Victoria Heiligenthal rounded out the top three, crossing the line in 22:14.6. Wisconsin placed eight runners in the top 10, including Vivian Hacker who finished fourth (22:29.3), Kyleigh Edwards in fifth (22:30.5), Emma Helstrom finishing sixth (22:46.7), Trista Pringle placing seventh (22:55.1), Samantha Stieve crossing the line eighth (23:16.2) and Heidi Heuerman finishing 10th (23:32.0).
2. 2019 DEBUT: Two women will be representing the Badgers for their first race of the 2019 season this weekend. Shea Ruly, a Wisconsin native and freshman, and Kristen Garcia, a sophomore for the Badgers, did not compete at Badger Classic. Other Badgers competing are Shulze, Heiligenthal, Edwards, Helstrom, Pringle, Stieve and Heuerman as well as Jada Beacom.
3. COACHES' POLL/RANKINGS AFTER WEEK TWO: The USTFCCCA released their national coaches' poll for week one which placed the Badgers at No. 9. The week two regional rankings were also released placing Wisconsin at No. 2 behind Michigan.
4. FRESHMAN TAKEOVER: The freshmen will be taking over the Instagram (BadgerTrackXC) this weekend to give live updates and behind the scenes action from the meet. Make sure to follow along so you don't miss any coverage from our phenomenal freshmen.
5. AWAY NEXT WEEK: The Badgers are on the road again next week for the Joe Payne Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on Oct. 4.
