MADISON, Wis. – After skating once through the slate of Big Ten opponents, the Badgers are set for their second round of conference play beginning with a visit from Michigan State this weekend.
Here are six quick things you should know before watching:
1. AHCAN THE AMAZING: Sophomore forward
Roman Ahcan notched three goals in last weekend's series versus No. 8 Ohio State, enough to earn him the Big Ten Second Star of the Week. The performance marked Ahcan's second career two-goal game, the first coming against Clarkson earlier this year. He ended with a plus- 2 on the weekend and his first career Big Ten weekly honor. He ranks second on the Badgers with eight goals this season.
2. CAPTAIN KALYNUK: Junior Captain
Wyatt Kalynuk has been doing his fair share of Badger scoring so far this season. He sits fourth on the team in points with five goals and 11 assists, including the two assists he dished out against the Buckeyes last Saturday. The defenseman is on pace to set a career high in season scoring and sits at the top of all current Badgers with 17 career multi-point games.
3. FRESHMAN FIREPOWER: Totalling five points over the weekend versus Ohio State, UW's freshman class has continued their dominance on the offensive end. Currently, the Badger first-years are fourth behind Boston University, Harvard and UMass Lowell in freshman scoring per game with an average of three points. They also lead the nation with 27 goals.
4. LAST TIME OUT: Looking to re-amp the second half of their season, a Spartan sweep this weekend could be the perfect opportunity for the Badgers, seeing as their first half ending with a road sweep at the hands of Michigan State. The Badgers were shutout by Spartan goalie John Lethemon on the Friday night outing of their past series, but responded back with four goals on Saturday. Unfortunately for Wisconsin, Michigan State scored five goals, ending the game in overtime. Cole Caufiled notched two goals against Lethemon in game two of the series and will look to continue that offensive production this weekend.
5. SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE: The No. 20 Spartans sit with a record of 11-10-1 and 6-4-1-0 in the Big Ten. Their leading scorer is Patrick Khodorenko with 23 points. The biggest what-if for Michigan State has been if their veteran goaltender can produce saves. Since facing the Badgers last, Michigan State is 3-1 when allowing two or less goal. The Badgers are 0-8 when scoring two or fewer goals.
