Caufield hat trick leads Wisconsin over Notre Dame

Badgers hold off Fighting Irish, 6-4

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Freshman Cole Caufield scored three goals in two periods to record his first career hat trick en route to a Badger victory over Notre Dame on Friday, 6-4.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the Wisconsin offense bounced back to score six of the next eight goals against the Fighting Irish.

The momentum turned into the Badgers' favor after Caufield's first goal late in the first period.

Coming back after the first intermission, Wisconsin scored three goals in the second period including two from Caufield and another from Ty-Pelton Byce. The Badgers entered the third with a one-goal lead.

From there, the Badger senior Max Zimmer and Wisconsin captain Wyatt Kalynuk sealed the win for the Badgers. Zimmer buried his first goal of the season in the third period, the eventual game-winner, followed by an empty-net goal from Kalynuk in the last minute of the game.

Senior goaltender Jack Berry finished the night with 29 saves, pairing with the Badger defense to kill off four of the Notre Dame's five power-plays.

Other point scorers for the Badgers include K'Andre Miller dishing out two assists along with Linus Weissbach, Sean Dhooghe, Jack Berry and Alex Turcotte with one assist each. Pelton-Byce and Kalynuk added an assist to match their goals as well.

Notes to know:
  • The Badgers beat the odds in handing Notre Dame their first loss in scoring more than three goals since the 2017-18 season
  • The Badgers notched six goals on the Fighting Irish, their most against Notre Dame since 1989, a span of 20 games.
  • Caufield's hat trick was the first for a Badger freshman since Robbie Earl on Feb. 6, 2004, at the Kohl Center against North Dakota.
  • Wyatt Kalynuk recorded his 50th career assist tonight
  • Goaltender Jack Berry tallied his second assist of the season
Straight from the rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato:

"There are plenty of games where it has looked like [Cole Caufield] was going to have the same kind of game. Tonight he was dead on in his shots and they went in for him. He finds way to beat guys to the net. Obviously, the shot is tremendous, but just getting in the position to be able to get to a scoring area like that.

"[Dylan Holloway] was rock solid. It's a shame the numbers haven't kept up with what [Holloway] has done, but that's okay. It's probably frustrating for him, and the NHL people are looking at it hoping for more numbers for the way he plays, but man he's playing really really good."
