Badger field athletes shine at Jack Jennett Open
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The 11th-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the Jack Jennett Open on Friday.
Redshirt sophomore Austin Glynn was the standout for the Badgers as he set a new personal record in the weight throw with a mark of 65 feet, 4 1/4 inches to win the event. This throw landed him a No. 5 spot on the Wisconsin all-time indoor performance list. Redshirt senior Tucker Wedig came in right behind Glynn, claiming second place with a throw of 65-2. Two additional athletes, redshirt senior Jamar Manning (fourth/61-4) and redshirt sophomore Dan Ufearo (ninth/55-7), also placed in the top 10.
Four Badgers advanced to the 60-meter hurdle finals. Sophomore Peyton Frankenreider placed second in 8.39 seconds, improving his time from last week by over a tenth of a second. Cade Amborn, Zach Lorbeck and Max Herkert came in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in 8.50, 8.63 and 8.75.
Redshirt freshmen Connor Barfknecht and Amborn placed top five in the high jump with Barfknecht placing second at 6-8 3/4 and Amborn fourth at 6-0 3/4.
Frankenreider also finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 22-7.
The underclassmen trio of Chandler Ifft, Canon Melstrand and Max Herkert all cleared heights that placed them in the top 10 in the pole vault. Ifft and Melstrand both cleared 14-11 but Ifft finished fourth due to fewer misses while Melstrand took fifth. Herkert took seventh at 13-5 1/4.
Up next, the Badgers send their sprinters, middle distance and distance runners as well as their horizontal jumpers to the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Indiana on Jan. 31-Feb. 1. Wisconsin's multi-event athletes and vertical jumpers head to the Jack Johnson Classic in Minneapolis on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
