Bowlby and Pettet will co-captain the Badgers this season
MADISON, WIS.— Seniors Grace Bowlby and Brette Pettet will serve as Wisconsin women's hockey team co-captains for the 2020-21 season, head coach Mark Johnson announced on Wednesday.Â
Senior Caitlin Schneider and junior Britta Curl are set to serve as alternate captains.Â
"This is a unique year," Johnson said. "Compared to any other year within our program, this is going to be the most challenging year and our leadership group is going to be crucial. They are going to be relied on very heavily to keep people's emotions, energy and spirit at a high level. I'm excited with who our team has chosen, I think Brette and Grace have been around, they have won championships and they understand what commitment is all about. With Britta and Caitlin, it's the same thing. With all four of them I think we have a core group that understands what is expected of the team, how we approach things and how to put ourselves in a position to move forward."
Bowlby was named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete the past two seasons and earned WCHA Defenseman of the Week on Feb. 4. The defenseman played in all 36 games last season, recording three goals and 17 assists. A native of Edina, Minnesota, Bowlby was invited to the 2020 USA Hockey Women's Evaluation Camp last month.
A native of Kentville, Nova Scotia, Pettet competed in all 36 games last season and recorded 12 goals and 16 assists. The forward had four game-winning goals, two three-point games and four power-play goals. She also recently participated in the Hockey Canada summer camp, which was held virtually this year.
Curl is the first junior to serve as an alternate captain since Sophia Shaver during the 2017-18 season. The forward was a WCHA Scholar-Athlete last season and recorded 16 goals and nine assists. A native of Bismarck, North Dakota, Curl attended the 2020 evaluation camp for USA Hockey with Bowlby.
A native of Glenview, Illinois, Schneider had a 17-point season in 2019-20, scoring nine goals and tallying eight assists. Two of her nine goals last year were game-winning efforts, including a memorable overtime winner against Northeastern to win the Battle of the Burgh.Â
This is the third time in four years that the Badgers will have co-captains for the season. Baylee Wellhausen and Claudia Kepler were co-captains for the 2017-18 season and Annie Pankowski and Shaver were co-captains for the 2018-19 NCAA champion squad.
