November 14, 2020 | Men's Hockey
UW starts 2-0 for second time in three seasons
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Skating away with their first Big Ten weekend sweep since February of 2017, the Badgers (2-0-0, 2-0-0-0 Big Ten) battled the Fighting Irish (0-2-0, 0-2-0-0 Big Ten) for a 5-3 win Saturday.
Senior Ty Pelton-Byce finished sophomore Cole Caufield's rebound to put the Badgers on the board with just 3:04 left in the first.
At the top of the second, sophomore Ryder Donovan tapped in his first goal of the season and of the game, assisted by junior Jack Gorniak and freshman Owen Lindmark, for a 2-0 lead.
Despite battling to maintain its advantage, Notre Dame's senior Colin Theisen scored twice in less than two minutes, including his first at 14:37 on the power play, to tie the game 2-2.
Junior Brock Caufield wouldn't have it though and sniped a breakaway pass from junior Dominick Mersch and senior Tarek Baker to post his first goal with just 39.4 seconds left on the clock.
The Fighting Irish pushed back halfway through the third as Theisen notched his first career hat trick and first three season goals against the Badgers, tying the game at 3-3.
With just 9:27 to go in the game, sophomore Dylan Holloway earned his second goal of the weekend, firing short-side high after circling the net to give UW the lead for good. Donovan's second goal of the night less than two minutes later closed the scoring and gave UW the 5-3 win.
Graduate netminder Robbie Beydoun is now 2-0 as a Badger, making 29 saves Saturday night.
