Badgers to welcome three freshmen next fall

Harvey, Picard and Wozniewicz all bring international experience to UW

MADISON, Wis.— The Wisconsin women's hockey program will welcome a trio of players with international experience next fall, UW head coach Mark Johnson announced Tuesday.

Defenseman Caroline (KK) Harvey, forward Marianne Picard and forward Sarah Wozniewicz all signed their National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period and will join the Badgers in the fall of 2021.

"It's a smaller but very strong class," Johnson said. "All three of them have had international experience as Harvey has skated with the U.S. while Picard and Wozniewicz have played for Team Canada. They are from great families and are very dedicated to the sport. I think all three of them are going to step in and make a big contribution to the team next year."

Caroline Harvey
A defenseman from Salem, New Hampshire, Harvey has competed with the United States at the IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championships in 2019 and 2020, winning silver at the 2019 tournament and gold at the 2020 championship. She was a team-best +4 in five contests at the 2020 IIHF Under-18 World Championship and was named one of the U.S. Top Three Players of the Tournament. A left-handed blueliner, Harvey competed in two under-18 series against Canada and was the youngest player invited to the 2020 USA Hockey Evaluation Camp earlier this fall.

Harvey helped the Selects Academy U-19 team win the New York State U-19 Ice Hockey State Titles in both her sophomore and junior seasons, and she was named the team MVP her junior year. Harvey is currently at the North American Hockey Academy for her senior year of high school.

Personal: Parents are David and Martha Harvey... has an older brother, Nolan and an older sister, Grace... role models are Kacey Bellamy and Meghan Duggan

Why Wisconsin? "Academically Wisconsin has many career paths that you can explore, the campus is beautiful and for the hockey aspect the coaching is incredible."

Head coach Mark Johnson: "KK brings a strong compete level who has proven her abilities at the highest level within her age level. She also has a lot of international experience with the U.S. under-18 team and even with the senior team as she was the youngest player at the U.S. evaluation camp earlier this year. She brings physicality and finesse to our blueline. She will be relied on to stop opponents' top forwards and contribute offensively on special teams."

Marianne Picard
A forward from Repentigny, Québec, Canada, Picard plays for the Etobicoke Junior Dolphins after spending two years at Stanstead College, where she played with current Badger goaltender Jane Gervais. Picard tallied three points on two goals and an assist at the 2020 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia, and earned a +4 plus/minus rating. She also skated for Canada's under-18 team during its annual summer series against the U.S. in 2019. Picard won a silver medal with Team Quebec at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta, during her 2018-19 season and a bronze medal with Team Quebec, which she captained, at the Nationals Women's Under-18 Championship in Morden & Winkler (Manitoba) during the 2019-20 season.

Picard tallied 101 points during two seasons at Stanstead College while captaining the team both years. She scored 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points in 22 games her sophomore year. In her junior season, Picard led the team in scoring with 34 goals and 34 assists to total 68 points over 45 games.

Personal: Parents are Benoit Picard and Isabelle Magnan... has an older brother, Charles... shoots right ... also competed in track and field

Why Wisconsin? "UW has one of the most amazing coaching staffs in the country. The facilities are outstanding and the campus is simply breathtaking. It's also one of the best schools for family medicine, which I intend to pursue a career in."

Head coach Mark Johnson: "Like the rest of our class, Marianne has that international experience, as she scored two goals at last year's IIHF under-18 world championships. She's a finesse player that has a good ability to score, great hands and high hockey IQ. She reminds us of Sydney McKibbon as she's fantastic on draws and is a very smart player."

Sarah Wozniewicz
A forward from Cochrane, Alberta, Canada, Wozniewicz plays for the Edge School for Athletes in Calgary, Alberta, where she is coached by two-time Olympic gold medalist and UW Hall of Famer Carla MacLeod. Wozniewicz recorded an assist and a +3 plus/minus rating at the 2020 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia. She also earned an invite to the Hockey Canada Under-18 Virtual Camp this past summer and helped Team Alberta win gold at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Wozniewicz has posted 107 points in 69 career games for Edge School, including seven points already during the 2020-21 season. Last season, she was named the Canadian Sport School Hockey League Female Prep Most Valuable Player after recording 52 points in 24 games and led Edge to the CSSHL U-18 Championship. She also was named the CSSHL Female Prep Freshman of the Year during the 2018-19 season.

Personal: Parents are John and Rhona Wozniewicz... has an older brother, Eric... shoots right ... honor-roll student all four years of high school ... also competed in soccer, track and field and badminton

Why Wisconsin?  The beautiful campus and the chance to play with and follow in the footsteps of many great players.

Head coach Mark Johnson: "Sarah is a power forward, is very strong and has a great nose around the net. She reminds us of Blayre Turnbull as they both have a hard shot and are strong players. Sarah has been coached by Carla MacLeod the last couple of years and we can't wait for Sarah to arrive in Madison."
