Badgers complete day two in Indiana and Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The 16th-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team completed day two of the split-squad meets that took place in Indiana and Minnesota over the weekend. It was an exciting weekend full of first-place finishes and personal records.

Three Badgers win events at Minnesota

Redshirt senior Zach Lorbeck began day two of the Jack Johnson Classic by sitting in first place in the heptathlon. On day two, Lorbeck placed third in the pole vault with a clearance of 14 feet, 5 1/2 inches, fourth in the 60 meter hurdles 8.42 seconds, and 11th in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:59.93. This was enough for him to hold on to his lead and secure the win. The Green Bay, Wisconsin, native ended the day with 5,651 points, only 12 points off his personal best of 5,663 points.

Freshman Max Herkert completed his first heptathlon as a Badger, scoring 4,546 points which landed him in fifth place. His best finishes came in the pole vault where he cleared 12-9 1/2 for fifth place, and in the 1,000 meters, where he finished fifth in 2:56.09. Redshirt freshman Cade Amborn claimed 12th-place, tallying 4,102 points.

Two additional Badgers won their respective events as well as one earning a personal best.

Sophomore Peyton Frankenreider won the triple jump with a mark of 46-0 3/4. He also advanced to the finals for the 60-meter hurdles, where he landed a sixth-place finish with a time of 8.31, only two-hundredths of a second off from his personal record.

Senior Rashid Coulibaly won the pole vault with a clearance of 17-0 1/4. Freshman Chandlar Ifft came in not far behind, claiming fifth-place with a clearance of 15-2 3/4. Redshirt freshman Canon Melstrand closed it out for the Badgers, taking seventh-place by clearing 14-8 3/4.

Junior George Ghafari earned a personal best in the high jump as he cleared 6-10 3/4, a full inch higher than his previous personal best, to take third.

Indiana Relays

Olli Hoare, The Bowerman Preseason watch list athlete, made his senior indoor debut at the Indiana Relays. Hoare placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:49.96. Redshirt sophomore Hudson Kugel came in next for the Badgers in eighth-place with a time of 1:51.19.

Redshirt senior Benjamin Eidenschink placed sixth in the fast section of the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:07.38.

Up next, the Badgers send their sprinters and horizontal jumpers to South Bend, Indiana, to compete in the Meyo Invitational from Feb.7-8. Throwers will travel to Ripon, Wisconsin, to compete in the Red Hawk Invitational on Feb. 8. Seniors Olli Hoare and Alicia Monson travel to New York to compete at the Millrose Games on Feb. 8.
