Badgers go 1-1 in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz.- The Wisconsin Softball team (9-7) went 1-1 on the first day of the Sun Devil Classic at Ferrington Stadium. The Badgers won 15-2 against Southern Utah in the first game of the day but lost their next game to No. 17 Arizona State 3-1.

Southern Utah
The Badgers kicked off the weekend with a dominant 15-2 win over Southern Utah in five innings.

Taylor Johnson sent one flying to center field and hit her first home run of the season in the top of the second inning. This extended the already big lead from the Badgers in the first inning, 9-0, to 10-0.

The nine runs in the first inning put the Badgers in a good position to win the game. Fiona Girardot hit a two-run home run to get the game going. Alli Clark scored off the home run after pinch-running for Kayla Konwent.

The Thunderbirds would walk three of the next four batters for Wisconsin, bringing in another run and making it a 3-0 score.

Tyra Turner advanced to second off a single down third base line that gave her two RBIs. Morgan Kummer and Taylor Johnson scored.

Kayla Konwent was back up to bat and reached first base on an error that eventually led her to third off another throwing error and brought in three more runs. This gave UW an 8-0 lead.

The final run of the inning came from Konwent when she scored on a sacrifice fly from Fiona Girardot.

Wisconsin had a five-run inning in the top of the third. The five runs were scored off of three hits from Girardot, Lauren Foster and Jordan Little. Foster's hit was a double down the left field line.

Southern Utah hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, but it wouldn't be enough to get past the 15 runs scored by the Badgers.

Haley Hestekin pitched three of the innings for Wisconsin and secured the win, while Maddie Schwartz and Tessa Magnanimo each pitched a solo inning. All three pitchers tallied a strikeout on the day.

The Badger softball team lost a tough one against a ranked team. The two teams fought the first couple innings to get on the board, but in the end, the Sun Devils had a pair of home runs that would edge UW in a Friday night lights match-up.
